Starting in 2025, internet service providers (ISPs) across Iowa will be able to leverage MidAmerican Energy’s expanding fiber network to build new broadband connections and bring affordable, reliable high-speed internet to Iowa communities.

Bridging the broadband gap

With the help of a $37.8 million federal grant, we are expanding our fiber network to extend more than 2,100 miles across Iowa and beyond. ISPs can then lease our expanded fiber infrastructure at a low rate, using our network as the “middle mile” between global internet networks and building new “last mile” connections to local areas. This will allow ISPs to provide high-speed broadband to underserved neighborhoods or introduce more internet options to communities currently served.

Benefits for all

Our fiber network expansion project will make it possible for:
  • ISPs to gain a cost-effective opportunity to expand their service area and grow their business by leasing our fiber assets and building last-mile broadband facilities.
  • Thousands of Iowa households and businesses to gain affordable, reliable access to the fast internet connection speeds that have become essential to modern life.
  • Small, rural Iowa communities to attract new businesses and families seeking low-cost areas with the resources necessary for remote work, e-commerce, streaming media and more.
  • MidAmerican to further support Iowa communities while making our own energy services even more reliable by enhancing and expanding our fiber communications network.
