At MidAmerican Energy, we recognize the important role we play in helping build a more sustainable future for the communities we serve. That’s why one of our biggest goals is to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. While investing in more renewable energy plays a big part in achieving that goal, embracing other clean initiatives, like driving electric vehicles (EVs), helps us take our efforts even further.

Leading the charge!

MidAmerican is the first utility in Iowa to take a step toward electrifying a heavy-duty service fleet. We now have three all-electric bucket trucks, two of which are used out in the field and one that is used at our Training Center for Excellence.

Our new all-electric trucks can drive up to 135 miles on a full charge and will operate hydraulic equipment for a full day's range of work.

These three trucks are our first test to see how all-electric, heavy-duty trucks perform in working conditions. As the technology further proves itself and our crews gain more experience, we will learn how to get the best performance out from the trucks and move closer to our goal of expanding our fleet of all-electric, heavy-duty vehicles.

You may also see our light-duty fleet of 100 vehicles – like cars and minivans that are partially or totally electric – out on the roads. They are driven by our team for day-to-day job duties.

Riding electric

Other organizations – like DART, Iowa City Transit and Metro QC – are hopping aboard the all-electric train as well. We are sponsors of the electric buses in Des Moines, Iowa City and the Quad Cities, which run on 100% electric power!
