Wind Energy

Future Planning

MidAmerican Energy began installing wind turbines in 2004. In 2009, MidAmerican Energy received approval from the Iowa Utilities Board to add up to 1,001 megawatts of wind-powered generation prior to 2013, and has agreements in place to fulfill that commitment.

In December 2010, MidAmerican Energy announced it would add 593.4 megawatts of new wind-powered generation in Iowa. The final portion of the 593.4-megawatt expansion project was placed in-service by year-end 2011. During 2012, MidAmerican Energy will add an additional 407.1 megawatts of new wind-powered generation in Iowa.

When the 2012 wind projects are complete, MidAmerican Energy will own 2,284.8 megawatts of wind generation, with approximately 31 percent of its total generation capacity powered by wind, and will have invested approximately $4 billion in wind-powered generation projects in Iowa.
