DES MOINES, Iowa – (June 13, 2013) – MidAmerican Energy Company announces the names of four Peregrine falcon chicks that recently hatched in nesting boxes at its Davenport, Iowa, office building and Louisa Generating Station in Muscatine. The selected names were announced during falcon banding events held May 29 in Davenport and June 4 at the Louisa Generating Station, where the Iowa Department of Natural Resources determined the sex of each falcon and banded the young so they could be monitored.

During the Davenport event, it was announced that the one female chick would be named Sandy in memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy. Spirit and Thunder were the names selected for the two females at the Louisa Generating Station, and the male was named Mashka, meaning strength.

Potential names for the falcon young were submitted via MidAmerican Energy’s Facebook page, which can be accessed at www.midamericanenergy.com. Diana Karstens, Nicholas Alexander and Diana Montagna Lensgraf, the three individuals who submitted the selected names, will receive a MidAmerican Energy gift bag and a photograph of his or her respective falcon.

MidAmerican Energy is dedicated to ensuring natural resources and habitats are protected. The falcon program is just one aspect of the company’s commitment to protecting and respecting the environment for the benefit of future generations.
