MidAmerican Energy Restores Service to 25,000 More Customers; Additional Customers to be Restored Today

DES MOINES, Iowa – (Dec. 21, 2012) – Since last night, MidAmerican Energy Company line workers, tree crews and contractors have made significant progress in restoring electricity as power outages decreased from 30,000 customers to 5,000.

The massive blizzard that struck a significant portion of MidAmerican Energy’s service territory Wednesday night caused broken poles, downed power lines, and damaged equipment. Despite today’s cold temperatures and dangerous road conditions, crews continue to work around-the-clock to restore service to customers.

Today, MidAmerican Energy has more than 650 employees and contractors working in Des Moines. That number includes 258 MidAmerican Energy linemen, 240 contractor line workers, and 143 contractor tree workers. In addition, MidAmerican Energy brought in 18 utility workers from its sister utility companies, Rocky Mountain Power in Utah and Pacific Power in Oregon. As conditions improve in neighboring states, MidAmerican Energy will utilize the Midwest mutual assistance program to secure more crews.

Since 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, MidAmerican Energy has restored service to 163,000 customers; the Des Moines metro area was and continues to be the most significantly impacted. Currently, 5,000 customers in the Des Moines area remain without service due to the blizzard.

Due to the severity of system damage and travel conditions, some customers may be without power for an additional 24 hours; however, crews are working to restore service to customers who have been without power the longest.
