New and Replacement Fireplacesarrows

When building a traditional fireplace, install ducts around it so cool room air is drawn in and circulated around the firebox. Warmed air is ducted back into the room by convection. To heat the room even more efficiently, install a small fan in the duct system.

Better yet, consider direct-vent fireplaces, which look like traditional fireplaces but are up to 78 percent energy efficient. By taking advantage of zero-clearance technology, direct-vent fireplaces can be installed next to walls and wood framing without a masonry foundation. There’s no chimney with a direct-vent fireplace; instead, it uses a sealed system with combustion air coming from outside the house. Direct-vent fireplaces have a securely sealed glass door to prevent combustion products from entering the house, leaving you with a warm room and an energy-efficient fireplace.
